Designer to Watch

Ulf Brauner

Berlin born designer Ulf Brauner is a rare talent to be watched. Escaping the city once in a while for inspiration, Ulf spent 4 years travelling the world with nothing but a backpack strapped to his shoulders. Recently, the gentle designer sat down with me for fine Italian coffee and a talk about his life and fashion.

It was clear to Ulf that he would follow a career in the creative industry, so after receiving a degree at the Universität der Künste (UdK) in fashion design, he did an internship in Bombay with a company that specialized in hand embroidery. It was fascinating for him todevelop embroidery swatches and samples and play around with different styles and techniques without concentrating on how to apply them to his own collection. After that, Ulf completed an exchange term at Tama Art University in Tokyo/Japan participating in a course in product design where he busied himself with experiences that were far removed from Berlin life and fashion for that matter. Yet eventually he returned to his passion, racking up a nomination this year for the European Fashion Award. With an overwhelming number of finalists creating men’s wear, the awards will be held during Pitti Uomo in June. His graduate collection entitled “auf und davon nach…”, (“gone to…”) touches on the designer’s desire to get away, yet again. From Australia to Africa and back through Europe, Ulf expresses his wandering soul in the collection, and mitigates his wanderlust in the process. One standout technique is the designer’s use of Arecibo message coding crafted with personalized messages. Furthermore, the collection is influenced by the African caftan named Boubou it’s prints and beautiful embroidery with colors evoking the beautiful landscape of the continent.
